A Sweet History

Black Jack Gum holds a special place in history as the first chewing gum sold in stick form. Known for its bold black licorice flavor, enhanced with anise and ginger, this iconic gum has been a favorite for generations.

Its origins trace back to Mexican chicle, brought to the U.S. by exiled President Santa Anna in the mid-1800s. Entrepreneur Thomas Adams initially experimented with chicle as a natural rubber substitute, but after multiple failed attempts, he shifted gears—creating and patenting a gum-making machine. By adding flavor, Adams transformed his invention into what would become Black Jack Gum, an enduring classic that helped shape the modern chewing gum industry.
