A Sweet History

Wine gums are a chewy, fruit-flavored candy that originated in the United Kingdom in 1909, created by Charles Gordon Maynard. His father, Charles Riley Maynard, a strict teetotaler and founder of the Maynards confectionery company, initially opposed the name due to its association with alcohol. However, he was eventually persuaded when assured the candies contained no alcohol. The name “wine gums” was a clever marketing tactic meant to appeal to adults and evoke the sophisticated flavors traditionally associated with wines like port, sherry, and claret.
